Malabar special Mathi varattiyath

“Mathi varattiyath or chaala varattiyath” is the very special and spicy curry.It is a very good combination with rice.Here i prepared this curry in the north malabar region of Kerala style.Instead of green chilly i use the”kaanthari mulak”,It is very tasty.It is dry item. Here we included the ingredients and preparation of the “malabar style mathi varattiyath”.


For marinating sardine:
Sardine(Mathi)-500 g
Tamarind-As required to your taste
Red chilly powder-2 table spoon
Turmeric powder-1/2 tea spoon
Salt -As required
Other ingredients:
Coconut oil-2 or 3 table spoon
Garlic-4 or 5 cloves
Mustard seeds-1 tea spoon
Curry leaves-As required
Onion -2 numbers(medium in size)
Kaanthari mulak-As required to your taste.
Tomato-2 numbers(medium in size)
Turmeric powder-1/2 tea spoon
Salt-As required
Water-1/2 cup to 1 cup

First we want to marinate the fish.For this take a cleaned sardine in a large bowl .And to this add two table spoon of kashmeeri red chilly powder,1/2 tea spoon of turmeric powder,required salt and tamarind as required to your taste.Mix it well and rest it for 30 minutes.Place it in a refrigerator is best.Then we want to start to make the curry.For this heat a pan and add two or three table spoon of coconut oil.Heat it well.Then splutter the mustard seeds.Then add crushed garlic and curry leaves .Roast it well.And then add chopped onions,salt and turmeric powder together.Saute it well till onions becomes transparent and golden brown in color.Then add the kaanthari mulak as required to your taste.We can add any type of green chilly.When we add the kaanthari mulak its become more tasty and healthy..Then add the chopped tomato to it.I take medium size two tomato.Saute it well till tomato becomes mashed.And then add the marinated sardine to it.Mix it well.And then add 1/2 cup to 1 cup water to it.Close the lid of pan and cook it for 5 minutes.Then open the lid and allow it to dry.Once it becomes dry switch off the flame.Now our tasty mathi varattiyath is ready to serve.
